    Influence of ambient air velocity orientation in thermal behaviour of open refrigerated display cabinets

    Open refrigerated display cabinets (ORDCs) suffer alterations of their thermal behaviour and of its performance due to variations of ambient air conditions (air temperature, relative humidity and velocity magnitude and orientation). Some factors interfere and affect the re-circulated air curtain behaviour and thus the equipment’s overall thermal performance. Examples of these factors are the location of air conditioning system discharge grilles, air mass flows originated by pressure differences due to openings to surroundings, and ambient air flow instabilities due to consumers’ passage nearby the frontal opening of the display cabinet, among others. This work performs a three-dimensional (3D) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of air flow and heat transfer in an ORDC. The influence of ambient air velocity orientation in performance of the re-circulated air curtain is evaluated. A CFD parametric study is developed considering the ambient air orientation parallel, oblique and perpendicular to the frontal opening plane of the equipment. The 3D effects of ambient air velocity orientation are determined through the analysis of air temperature and velocity inside the equipment as well as along and across the air curtain. The longitudinal air flow oscillations and length extremity effects are analyzed, having a considerable influence in the overall thermal performance of the equipment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    CFD parametric study of ambient air velocity magnitude influence in thermal behaviour of open refrigerated display cabinets

    The thermal behaviour of open refrigerated display cabinets depends of ambient air condition variations such as air temperature, relative humidity and velocity magnitude and orientation. The location of air conditioning system discharge grilles, mass flows originated by pressure differences due to openings to surroundings, and air flow perturbation due to consumers’ passage nearby the frontal opening of the display cabinet, among others, affect the re-circulated air curtain behaviour and consequently the equipment’s overall thermal performance. This study presents a three-dimensional (3D) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of the physical-mathematical phenomena occurring in an open refrigerated display cabinet, and particularly concerns the aerothermodynamics system of recirculated air curtain, under different magnitude values of the ambient air velocity (according to EN-ISO Standard 23953 and doubled one). A parametric study is undertaken for the air flow and heat transfer numerical predictions to determine the open refrigerated display cabinet’s thermal behaviour and of the re-circulated air curtain, taking into account the ambient air velocity’s magnitude. Results from experimental tests following EN-ISO Standard 23953 for climatic class n.er 3 (Tamb = 25 ºC, amb = 60%) are used to characterize the phenomena near inlets, outlets and physical borders.     Applications of Axiomatic Design Theory in Design for Human Safety in Manufacturing Systems: A Literature Review

    Design for Human Safety (DfHS) is an approach to integrate knowledge of human safety in the design process. DfHS is multi-disciplinary in its nature, requiring many kinds of information and knowledge. Number of DfHS studies tried to apply Axiomatic Design (AD) to achieve their aims. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on application of AD in DfHS in manufacturing systems and to propose a roadmap for future DfHS works. This paper examines the number and type of publications dealing with this context. The review covers papers published between 1990 (when AD was introduced first) and 2017. It is based on a range of combinations of the following keywords: “Axiomatic design” and “safety” or “accident” or “hazard” or risk”. This review has identified 15 research topics that were clustered into three main research groups: (1) application of AD in ergonomic design; (2) application of AD in human-computer interaction; and (3) application of AD in integrating safety systematically in design process. The authors also tried to identify which axiom of AD has been used in these researches

    Ten Years of High Resolution Structural Research on the Voltage Dependent Anion Channel (VDAC)—Recent Developments and Future Directions

    Mitochondria are evolutionarily related to Gram-negative bacteria and both comprise two membrane systems with strongly differing protein composition. The major protein in the outer membrane of mitochondria is the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), which mediates signal transmission across the outer membrane but also the exchange of metabolites, most importantly ADP and ATP. More than 30 years after its discovery three identical high-resolution structures were determined in 2008. These structures show a 19-stranded anti-parallel beta-barrel with an N-terminal helix located inside. An odd number of beta-strands is also shared by Tom40, another member of the VDAC superfamily. This indicates that this superfamily is evolutionarily relatively young and that it has emerged in the context of mitochondrial evolution. New structural information obtained during the last decade on Tom40 can be used to cross-validate the structure of VDAC and vice versa. Interpretation of biochemical and biophysical studies on both protein channels now rests on a solid basis of structural data. Over the past 10 years, complementary structural and functional information on proteins of the VDAC superfamily has been collected from in-organello, in-vitro, and in silico studies. Most of these findings have confirmed the validity of the original structures. This short article briefly reviews the most important advances on the structure and function of VDAC superfamily members collected during the last decade and summarizes how they enhanced our understanding of the channel

    Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a serious chronic cardiac condition that brings high risk of urgent hospi- talization and could lead to death. In this work we show how all the input clinical parameters for classifying CHF using Machine Learning can be acquired. The requested input are Blood Pres- sure, Heart Rate, Brain Natriuretic Peptide, Electrocardio- gram, Blood Oxygen Saturation, Height, Weight and Ejection Fraction. The next step will be designing a novel device and con- necting it to our Machine Learning classifier. A particular at- tention will be put to the assessment of electromagnetic compat- ibility (EMC) with other devices, taking into account that this new device will be used in many different settings (home, out- door, etc.

    The parsec-scale properties of the radio galaxy 4C 26.42 in the dense cooling core cluster A1795

    The aim of the present work is to study the radio emission on the parsec scale of 4C 26.42, the Brightest cluster galaxy in Abell 1795, in the framework of radiosources in a dense cool core cluster. We present Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations at 1.6, 5, 8.4 and 22 GHz. We performed a spectral index and multiepoch analysis. The source appears two-sided with a well defined and symmetric Z-structure at ~5 mas from the core. The kiloparsec-scale morphology is similar to the parsec-scale structure, but reversed in P.A., with symmetric 90 deg. bends at about 2 arcsec from the nuclear region. Comparing data obtained at 3 different epochs we derive a 3σ\sigma limit to the apparent proper motion of βa\beta_a < 0.04. We suggest that the parsec-scale jets are sub-relativistic, in contrast with the high velocities found for most low-power radio galaxies. The origin of the unusual radio morphology remains a puzzle. We suggest that the identification of the parent galaxy with the central cD in a cooling cluster plays an important role in the properties and structure of the jets.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, Accepted for pubblication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    The influence of magnetic fields on the Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect in clusters of galaxies

    We study the influence of intracluster large scale magnetic fields on the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. In a macroscopic approach we complete the hydrostatic equilibrium equation with the magnetic field pressure component. Comparing the resulting mass distribution with a standard one, we derive a new electron density profile. For a spherically symmetric cluster model, this new profile can be written as the product of a standard (β\beta-) profile and a radius dependent function, close to unity, which takes into account the magnetic field strength. For non-cooling flow clusters we find that the observed magnetic field values can reduce the SZ signal by 10\sim 10% with respect to the value estimated from X-ray observations and the β\beta-model. If a cluster harbours a cooling flow, magnetic fields tend to weaken the cooling flow influence on the SZ-effect.Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronom

    The expression level of HJURP has an independent prognostic impact and predicts the sensitivity to radiotherapy in breast cancer

    INTRODUCTION. HJURP (Holliday Junction Recognition Protein) is a newly discovered gene reported to function at centromeres and to interact with CENPA. However its role in tumor development remains largely unknown. The goal of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of HJURP in breast cancer and its correlation with radiotherapeutic outcome. METHODS. We measured HJURP expression level in human breast cancer cell lines and primary breast cancers by Western blot and/or by Affymetrix Microarray; and determined its associations with clinical variables using standard statistical methods. Validation was performed with the use of published microarray data. We assessed cell growth and apoptosis of breast cancer cells after radiation using high-content image analysis. RESULTS. HJURP was expressed at higher level in breast cancer than in normal breast tissue. HJURP mRNA levels were significantly associated with estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), Scarff-Bloom-Richardson (SBR) grade, age and Ki67 proliferation indices, but not with pathologic stage, ERBB2, tumor size, or lymph node status. Higher HJURP mRNA levels significantly decreased disease-free and overall survival. HJURP mRNA levels predicted the prognosis better than Ki67 proliferation indices. In a multivariate Cox proportional-hazard regression, including clinical variables as covariates, HJURP mRNA levels remained an independent prognostic factor for disease-free and overall survival. In addition HJURP mRNA levels were an independent prognostic factor over molecular subtypes (normal like, luminal, Erbb2 and basal). Poor clinical outcomes among patients with high HJURP expression were validated in five additional breast cancer cohorts. Furthermore, the patients with high HJURP levels were much more sensitive to radiotherapy. In vitro studies in breast cancer cell lines showed that cells with high HJURP levels were more sensitive to radiation treatment and had a higher rate of apoptosis than those with low levels. Knock down of HJURP in human breast cancer cells using shRNA reduced the sensitivity to radiation treatment. HJURP mRNA levels were significantly correlated with CENPA mRNA levels. CONCLUSIONS.
